All the excitement of the races

Leicester racecourse review Priceless Life of Mine

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to the races and it sure did brighten up a dull Monday! I've been to the Nottingham race track on a couple of occasions but never to my local one. Myself and a plus one were invited along to race day at the Leicester racecourse and to enjoy a three course lunch in the Nelson suite restaurant

The restaurant is fabulous with panoramic views over the racecourse and is really large, seating up to 280 people. It's got such a lovely atmosphere and really spacious which is a good thing as people are walking around all the time going in and out to place bets and watch the races in between courses. Don't worry you can place your bets at the table if you'd rather stay put and you can watch all the racing from your table on the tv screens dotted around the restaurant. You get a race card on your table so you know who's running in each race, not that any of it meant anything to me, both Sarah and I just picked the name of the horse we liked and went from there!! I'll mention at this point we only had one winner. Bad times.

The restaurant offer various packages, including corporate and all inclusive drinks packages, which makes it a great option for any occasion, not only are you getting fabulous food, you're also getting the thrill of the races too.

Their Sunday carvery is apparently very popular but we had the Table d'hôte menu. I wasn't sure what to expect of the food if I'm being totally honest but I was pleasantly surprised. I opted for the fig & goats cheese tart and Sarah had french onion soup to start.

For mains I had pan seared pork fillet and Sarah had the lemon sole.

For dessert we both went for the same, warm apple pie with raspberries, creme anglaise AND vanilla pod ice-cream! Dessert was my favourite of the three courses.

There were three or four options to choose from for each course including a vegetarian option and all of the food was totally delicious and beautifully presented. The portion sizes weren't overly huge, not small by any means, but just right, leaving you not too stuffed so having room for dessert.

The staff take your order for starter and main shortly after being seated at your table and I did wonder how you could possibly pop in and out during courses without your food being left on your table to go cold?! It became obvious that if guests went out to watch the race the next course would be held back until they were seated again and ready. It was an orchestrated affair with waiting staff keeping an eagle eye on their tables and it seemed to work well. Overall the staff were good and attentive but we did had to ask for dessert to be served after a little wait and then we had to ask for our coffee.

There were quite a lot of races on our day and Sarah and I went out to watch everyone of them (we only put a small bet on each) so our waiters were probably fed up with us going in and out, buy hey, that's what you're there for!

With it being a Monday I expected it to be pretty quiet but it wasn't, okay so it wasn't packed but more people than I thought. It was a bright autumn afternoon so we wandered a little outside going over to the parade ring to study the horses (not) and get up close to the track to watch the horses and jockeys come thundering past leaving you with a real buzz and wanting to watch more and more.

Okay, so we didn't come away with wads of cash but we both absolutely loved the day and the hospitality at the Leicester racecourse and we're already thinking about when we'll go back as a group.

There's so much going on at the racecourse, including family fun days and ladies day of course which is extremely popular so if you want to know more about any of the events and race days you'll find all you need to know right here

*A big thank you to Leicester racecourse and Cool as Publicity for the invite. All thoughts and opinions 100% my own.
