Thoughts on the Smashbox Always on Matte liquid lipstick & Be Legendary lipstick

I've been meaning to get this post up for a few weeks but you know what it's like don't you? All good intentions and that! Anyway, I (finally) want to shout about these NEW lipsticks from Smashbox. Back in September Smashbox arranged an event for the Thirty Plus collective to showcase some new products but of course not everyone, including me, could attend, so, they gave Hayley a selection of lipsticks to give out to some that couldn't make it. We had to comment on the Thirty Plus FB page and names would be drawn at random. Guess what? My name was pulled out and I genuinely never 'win' anything so I was chuffed to bits.

I was sent three colours. Two from the new Always on matte liquid lipsticks range and one of the Be Legendary range.

I'll talk about the matte liquid lipsticks first. I'm really not that great at describing make up so all I can tell you is what I feel about it. Quite frankly I love them. The first thing I noticed was how easy they are to apply. We all know how hard it can be to apply a red lipstick but the precision with this is fabulous. The specially designed pointed tip gives a precise line (I don't even need a lip liner) and then you fill in with the flat part of the wand. The colour goes on effortlessly, glossy but then dries to a matte finish within seconds. It's not heavy and because it's infused with a lip priming oil it's not drying on the lips like some matte lipsticks can be. Smash box claim these liquid lipsticks will last up to 8 hours and oh my God they bloody do! It doesn't budge. It really does last hours and hours. Personally I like to touch up during the day when I'm wearing ANY lipstick as I like to refresh my makeup but with these if you want to go out for the night without any baggage you can rest assured one of the matte liquid lipsticks will see you through a good few hours. You will need an oil based make up remover to get this off though, it won't just wipe off.

My lipsticks didn't come in a box and it's really hard to see the shade printed on the bottom. I know I'm getting old but even Emily couldn't read it! I think we've worked out the one above is the shade Bawse, even though it doesn't look anything like the shade on the colour chart on the website, but then I find they're always way out anyway don't you? I never buy lipstick on line unless I've tested the shade first. It's more of a brown-y red online but it's definitely a red-red! See, that's as technical as I get! Being older I tend to steer away from reds, I've tried some in the past but couldn't get it right so I didn't hold out much hope when a red one popped through my letterbox. I applied with trepidation and *BOOM* it looked bloody gorgeous if I do say so myself!

The second one was in a shade called Stepping Out. I was completely excited by the look of this one the minute I opened the package as it's a nude shade. I tried it immediately but sadly even though it's nude, it's a little too dark for me. I could wear it, but I just don't think it suits me that much. No worries though, Emily soon nabbed it and it looks perfect on her, she likes the slightly darker nudes and she's worn it to death. There are 20 shades in the Liquid lips collection.

The final one of the bunch is the Be Legendary lipstick in the shade Spectacle. This glides on so easily, is a modern matte lipstick yet is really creamy. It's enriched with shea butter and vitamin C & E to keep the lips feeling soft. It's quite a pigmented formula so one/two passes over the lips is sufficient. More of an orangey red I'd consider this to be more of a summer colour but I do love it. I can't vouch for the longevity of this one as I've not worn it out and about yet. I've literally just worn it around the house and it's comfortable on. They have a whopping 120 shades so theres definitely one for you!

So, getting 2 out of 3 that suit me isn't bad when it was pot luck on what shades I got. Emily was quite pleased too :) I especially love the matte liquid lips and am already looking at buying a different shade to try.

Thank you Smashbox and Thirty Plus.

If you fancy trying the new ranges or just want a little look you'll find it all here with individual links above too.

Have you tried any of the new Smashbox lipsticks yet?

  1. I went to the Smashbox event and my daughter nabbed the browny nude too. It looked great on her so I couldn't really say no. It didn't do much for me, but if you have browny red hair then it's terrific. I like that these shades are a real push for your comfort zone, it's nice to shake things up once in a while and try something new.

  3. The Smashbox Always On liquid lipsticks are my absolute favorite liquid lipsticks on the market. They are super comfortable, really pigmented, and I totally agree that the applicator makes precision application so easy!
