Halloween chocolate spider cakes

Halloween chocolate spider cakes

Halloween is such a fun time, no good for the waistline mind with all the sweets and cakes that fill the shelves, but it's especially great for the kids. You can make these for yourself as a treat, or to take along to a party and hey if you've got kids why not let them get involved and make some scary spider fairy cakes with a blood centre!

What you'll need:

225g (8oz) unsalted butter (softened)
225g (8oz) caster sugar
225g (8oz) self raising flour
1tsp baking powder
4 eggs
2 tbsp cocoa powder
100g (3 1/2 oz) chocolate chips

To decorate:

175g (6oz) good quality plain chocolate
Chocolate sprinkles
Red m&m's for the eyes
Liquorice or strawberry laces for the legs

They're so easy to make as you more or less throw it all in together. Make sure you pre heat your oven to 180ºC (350ºF/Gas 4) and line your cake tin with paper cases.

Place the butter, caster sugar, flour, baking powder, eggs and cocoa powder in a large mixing bowl and mix with an electric whisk for 2/3 minutes until well combined. Parents please make sure you do this bit as electric mixers and little fingers do not go together. If you are using a hand whisk make sure the butter is well softened and go slowly or you'll end up looking like a ghost as flour will go everywhere!!

Next tip in all the chocolate chips and mix.

Place a small dollop (technical term) of the cake batter in the paper case, followed by a little bit of jam. Make sure you do only use a little bit of jam as if you put in too much it will sink to the bottom. You just need a little so when they're cut into there's a little bit of gruesome blood inside. Yuk! After the jam top with some more of the cake batter and pop in the oven for 18/20 minutes.

Oh yeah parents don't forget if the kids are helping they get to lick the bowl and spoon clean!

When the cakes are done leave them on a wire rack to cool. You then need to decorate.

Grown ups only: Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Once melted take it off the pan and I'd say to then leave it for a few minutes to firm up a tiny bit otherwise it runs everywhere, then spoon over the cakes. (Little fingers will get covered here) The eyes and legs must go on next followed by a dusting of sprinkles. Top tip: Don't make the legs too long or they'll slide off.

Et voila!

Halloween chocolate spider cakes

One I made earlier chopped in half right between the eyes, after I'd pulled its legs off! (It's the only spider I'll ever go anywhere near).

Do you celebrate Halloween? Do you dress up?

Whatever you're doing this weekend, whether it be full horror make up, a party, trick or treating make sure you stay safe.
